Early colonizing comparison

During the age of exploration, European nations colonized the Americas as a way to seek refuge for oppressed religions, spread their beliefs, gain land and money, or expand their empire. These colonies were split into New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern colonies. Although they bordered the same coast, they differed in politics, social customs, and economy. In England, the Puritans (often called Separatists) were unhappy with the lack of purifying the English Reform had done for the church; they wanted to leave the Church of England behind completely and free it of political influence. When Elizabeth I came to power she had little tolerance for the Puritan ideals, and neither did her successors James I and Charles I. This prompted the Puritans’ move to America and the establishment of the New England colonies. These colonies eventually became the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Their government was set up based on New Testament writings. They made attending church a law, and whoever went against the church or their leaders was penalized by fee or whipping. Later on in the last half of the seventeenth century, the government was not church run, but rather, run by property holders that made up councils and governors. The colonies set up were more compact and built to last than most colonies of the time. They developed much fast and had growing populations because of their plentiful food and land. Unlike the local Indians, the men harvested the food while the women were the homemakers and food preparers. New England’s economy was initially based on trade. After this failed, they moved to North America where they had extensive land area. They had an advantage over the other European powers with their large number of people and land to raise livestock and grow crops. Tobacco proved to be their most profitable crop.
